Relationship of prostate volume and prostate-specific antigen levels in Sri Lankan men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Purpose: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is an important cause of morbidity for ageing men worldwide. However, the available study limited on natural history BPH and dynamics Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) in Sri Lankan population. This aimed to assess relationship between serums Prostate Specific (PSA), prostate volume (PV), PSA density (PSAD) evaluate variations above parameters with aging mean (BPH). Material methods: was a retrospective study, diagnosed from January 2009 evaluated. approved by Ethics Review Committee Colombo South Teaching Hospital patient informed written consent received. Those UTI, >10ng/dl suspicious digital rectal examination (DRE) were excluded study. Data statistically analyzed determine PSA, PV, PSAD age groups. Results: recruited total number 562 men, clustered into 5 groups their Volume (PV) 42.9 (12.56SD). The median 2.5ng/dl inter quartile range 0.37. (PSA/PV) 0.11 (0.023SD). tendency towards increase increasing showed statistical significance (P<0.05). not changed much different group except 51-60 group. It noted fluctuating around majority Conclusion: PV age. Mean relatively small compare blacks Caucasians. .PSA comparable published data other countries could be used as surrogate marker therapeutic decision making.
